TURIN 20 – 23 July 2022

“2022 FISU World University Championship Golf” presented in Turin

The World University Golf Championship will be held in Torino (Italy) from 20-23 July 2022, marking the 18th edition of this event which began in 1986 thanks to Primo Nebbiolo, then president of FISU (International University Sports Federation) and CUS Torino. This will be the fourth time that the highest level competition in world university golf takes place in Italy, following two editions in Cagliari and one in Torino in 2006. The Championship will be held at the Royal Park I Roveri in La Mandria, which has previously hosted four Italian Open tournaments and many international competitions. This tournament is one of the international events organized by CUS Torino leading up to the 2025 Winter University World Games, together with the 2024 Ski Orienteering World University Championships, and also represents an opportunity to promote the 2023 Ryder Cup, scheduled in Rome. The World University Golf Championship 2022 will be included among the prestigious tournaments that establish the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

The goal will be to beat the current records of participation, in terms of the number of Federations registered and the number of athletes and staff taking part. Records were broken in part in 2006, when there were 21 registered Federations, as in Lausanne 1996, but the total number of persons participating reached a high of 174. The new numbers to beat are 22 nations, reached in Crans Montana (Switzerland) in 2014, and 203 participants, reached in Liberec (Czech Republic) in 2012.

Riccardo D’Elicio – Cus Torino President
“We are happy to have brought to Turin another event of great importance, and which brings us closer to the winter University of 2025. An event that concerns a sport that is often considered exclusive but that instead we are pushing so that it can involve as many people as possible. In this regard we hope that people will also approach golf through our driving range “Golf Colonnetti”, where we will try to attract participants through a series of free open days. In 2006 we organized this event and it was a great success. We must thank the Royal Park I Roveri for the availability given for this event in which the goal will be to exceed every record of participation “.

Fabrizio Ricca – Piedmont Regional Councilor for Sport
“It is nice to have another moment of university sport in view of the 2025 Universiade. I had the pleasure of being in Rome with Chimenti and discussing the initiatives related to golf in Piedmont. We will be the European Region of Sport in 2022 and a University World Cup will give us international visibility”.

Domenico Carretta – Turin City Councilor for Sport
“I am new and therefore I am not here to take the credit of those who worked on this event. I therefore thank all those who have made this event come to Turin. We are in tune to promote every discipline and type of sport with great attention to the territory and issues related to physical activity. Creating a system is fundamental: confrontation is necessary to build a path together towards the Universiade “.

Marco Durante – Director of Federgolf
“I have experienced the university world championship since the first edition, in 1986 when I won the team gold medal as an athlete. The Federation and CONI give a lot of value to the double career because it is important to study to have a future after sport. Training for our sport is like studying to us. Both are valued. The Royal Park is one of the clubs that gives prestige to our city and our region and this event will be one of the main stages in view of the Rider Cup in Rome 2023 “.

Marco Aquilino – Director of Royal Park I Roveri
“Thanks to CUS Torino and the institutions for choosing and believing in the Royal Park, and the Federation with which we organize high-level events every year. We hosted the Italian Open from 2009 to 2012 and our goal is to make a great event and an excellent figure worldwide “.
