TURIN 20 – 23 July 2022

An experience from Hyunwoo Kim a FISU volunteer

Hyunwoo Kim (Jasper) from South Korea is a FISU volunteer that will participate at the World University Championship Golf in Turin. The success of the event is closely linked to the commitment of the FISU Volunteer, that represent the soul of this important sport appointment for our college athletes.

Why did you decide to became a FISU volunteer and what represent for you this rule?

First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the FISU and WUC Golf organizers who invited me to be an international volunteer to this event. This is a very proud moment for me because the success of the event is dependent on the commitment of the FISU Volunteers.

I am so happy that my first overseas trip will be to your beautiful city Turin. I am looking forward to it. Based on my knowledge and experience I will give my best to make sure the event runs smoothly and is a huge success.

I would like to gain the experience and knowledge that is practical and necessary for becoming an international sports administrator.

I will represent myself by participating in the FISU World University Championship Golf in Torino.  This is so I can help promote the spirit of the university sports movement and develop programs for students to learn great leadership through sports activities and education.

What do you expect from the next World University Championship Golf in Turin in term of opportunity and experience?

I will pioneer active communication between volunteers and student-athletes.

This experience will create new opportunities where volunteers and student-athletes can participate and interact together. Also, through this event, we can be good sports leaders in our different roles and an example to others who aspire to follow or continue in university sports movement.

What is the value of such an event for a student that is also an athlete?

I think FISU World University Championship promotes amateurism to student-athletes.

Originally, athletes who enjoyed playing sports without pursuing material gains were called amateurs. Nowadays, it is very difficult to find such athletes who don’t strive for professionalism.

A lot of student-athletes can participate and be inspired to join the university movement in this event. That is why for me the value of such events for the student that is also an athlete is amateurism.

How the management of volunteers in sports events can do the difference and what is the aim?

Management of volunteers in sports events can contribute to the formation of successful events by Organising Committees and Volunteers based on active exchange and solidarity.

While working for the supporters of the Korean Skating Union, I had experience, volunteering for the ISU Short Track World Cup and Figure Korea Challenge and then worked as NTO at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. It was a beneficial opportunity to support and educate domestic and foreign volunteers about the operation of the game. Through this experience, I realized that active communication and solidarity between volunteers and the organizing committee can facilitate the operation of sports event and provide successful competitions to athletes.

Your best experience and memories as a volunteer?

The most memorable experience I had when I was a volunteer was when South Korea was under strict quarantine rule.

In spite of this situation, I wanted to look for sports experience opportunities for my friends from various countries as the president of the international student club on campus. So, following the quarantine rules we were able to experience ice skating together and made precious memories. Even though the languages and cultures were different, we were able to learn and be inspired and got to know people as friends.

That’s why through sports, I believe we can build  harmonious international relationships that can  make beautiful memories, especially as a volunteer.
